Why we decided to leave our last property
Basically the answer to this is quite simple. We wanted to get onto the property ladder!
Previous to this we had been renting and thought the time was right to make a bigger commitment.
What type of property were we looking for?
As a young couple at the time with no children but with thoughts of a family in the foreseeable future we decided we wanted a village location in a good school catchment area.
The type and size of property was really decided by our budget.
A new build!
The village where we eventually made our home had a development of new builds and as we were both in full time employment with little ‘DIY time' we decided a new build was perfect for us.
After visiting the show home we looked at the plots of land available and after choosing our plot we paid the holding deposit.
Over the next few weeks we made various trips back to the showroom to choose kitchens, tiles etc.
The coming weeks and months were spent excitedly visiting the site and watching our house being built!

Having a Building Survey carried out
We would definitely recommend having a building survey carried out by an independent surveyor, i.e. one that is not affiliated to any estate agent or mortgage company, and who can give you unbiased feedback and advice. You may think it's not worth having one carried out and just have the basic mortgage survey but it could literally save you thousands of pounds if they find a major fault with the property.
Did the sale go through with no hitches?
As there was no chain in our house buying process the sale went through without any problems.
The hardest thing was choosing the décor!
Did our new property meet our expectations?
We have lived in the property now since 1999 and are very happy here. We love the village location, the boys are very happy in the village schools and we have some fantastic neighbours and good friends in the village.
There are definitely many plus points to our move such as:
1. Owning our own property
2. Great village location
3. Good schools
4. Cul-de-sac location
5. Great neighbours
6. The potential to be able to extend when we can afford to.
One of the things we didn't really think through was the car parking situation as we have a drive big enough for two cars but as it is a shared drive we can only ever have one car on it or we would block our neighbours access.
Also the only access to the garden is either through the garage or from the patio doors in the dining area, which can sometimes be a pain. I would love a back gate and a bit more room now we have the two boys but overall it's great!
